Students do not seem to be overly concerned with securing their computers, either at home or at university. Most of them know their PC security needs improvement, but only a few of them take action.

This has been found by research done by SURFnet, an IT service supplier for higher education. Backups are rarely made, spam is deleted without the system administrator being notified, and only too often are students misled by phishing mail, attempts to retrieve personal data. Also, students rarely lock their computers when they move away for a few moments.
Rather than ignorance, laziness seems to be the cause of all this. “Students will probably only get their PC security sorted after the damage has been done”, says a spokesman for SURFnet. “Suppose that months’ worth of thesis writing gets lost in the twink of an eye. That would teach you to make regular backups.”
Staff members in higher education are taking much better care of PC security than students are. They report spam, phishing and threats over the internet more often.
SURFnet carried out their research in connection with a campaign aimed at making both students and staff aware of the importance of PC security
