Doughnut balls
A traditional delicacy in Belgium and Holland: doughnut balls (in Dutch: oliebollen). It’s a fried yeast dish, traditionally eaten at New Year’s Eve. During the year they are sold at carnivals across the country in a doughnut ball booth (oliebollenkraam).
New Year’s plunge
The Dutch love traditions. Another one can be seen, enjoyed and smirked at on the first of January. Many Dutchies like to start the new calendar wet by doing the New Year’s plunge and jump in local lakes and the North Sea.
St. Nicholas surprise
St Nicholas’ birthday is celebrated with lots of candy and gifts. When everyone participating in any given party is older, the evening is often exchanged for an evening of poetry and surprises. A surprise is a gift, often selfmade and very ingenious packed.
Ginger nuts
Ginger nuts, or the so called pepernoten (Dutch), are available in all supermarkets from October till December. The Dutch love them, because of their flavour. It can also be seen as an announcement for the arrival of Saint Nicolas (Sinterklaas).
